Behind Every Great Rooibos Blend

The next time you open a box of LMC rooibos, you’ll notice the aroma, the colour of the botanicals and perhaps already have a favourite blend in mind. What you don’t see is everything that happens before the tea reaches your cup.

Behind every blend are countless decisions, from selecting the rooibos and choosing complementary ingredients to tasting, refining and testing every batch. It’s a process that begins long before the kettle boils.

It Starts with the Rooibos

Every LMC blend starts with rooibos grown in South Africa’s Cederberg region, the only place in the world where rooibos grows naturally. Its smooth, naturally caffeine-free character makes it an ideal base for blending with fruit, herbs, spices and florals.

Before it’s approved for blending, the rooibos is assessed by a trained in-house grading team. They look at its appearance, aroma, taste and the colour of the brewed infusion, which should develop into a rich red. Each batch is evaluated according to recognised South African grading standards before moving on to the next stage.

Choosing Ingredients That Work Together

Creating a rooibos blend isn’t about adding as many ingredients as possible. It’s about choosing ingredients that bring out the best in one another.

LMC sources botanicals locally and from around the world, selecting ingredients that contribute something unique to the blend. Some add bright citrus notes, others gentle floral aromas or the comforting warmth of spice. The goal is always the same: every ingredient should complement the rooibos, never compete with it.

People enjoy tea for different reasons and have different flavour preferences. Some naturally reach for something fruity, others prefer floral blends, warming spices or refreshing herbal infusions. That’s why the LMC collection has been developed to include a variety of flavour profiles, making it easy to find a blend that suits your taste and the moment.

Finding the Right Balance

New blends often begin with an interesting ingredient, a flavour combination or a botanical that’s gaining attention. From there, the blending team starts refining.

The biggest challenge is balance. Rooibos pairs beautifully with many ingredients, but if one flavour dominates, the blend doesn’t work. Every adjustment, no matter how small, changes the character of the tea.

Taste isn’t the only consideration. Whole botanicals are chosen for the visual experience too, creating a tea that’s as enjoyable to watch brewing as it is to drink.

Before a blend joins the LMC collection, it’s tasted and approved by a panel against strict grading criteria, including appearance, aroma, flavour and cup infusion. Only once it meets those standards does it become part of the range.

Whether you enjoy the delicate floral notes of LMC Jasmine & Orange Blossom, the fresh fruit character of LMC Pear & Elderflower or the comforting warmth of LMC Spicy Chai, each blend has gone through the same careful process.

Bringing the Blend to Life

Once a blend has been approved, the journey continues. The packaging design process takes inspiration from the ingredients inside the tea itself. The botanicals, fruits, herbs and flowers that make each blend unique are reflected in the artwork on every box, creating a visual connection to what’s waiting inside.

It’s the final step in bringing the blend to life, making every LMC tea just as inviting on the shelf as it is to brew and enjoy at home.

Every Cup Tells the Story

A great rooibos blend isn’t defined by one ingredient or one flavour. It’s the result of every stage in the blending process, from selecting the rooibos to refining the final flavour.

The next time you brew a cup of LMC rooibos, you’ll know there’s a lot more behind it than the ingredients listed on the box. Every blend reflects the time, care and expertise that goes into creating a tea you’ll enjoy time and time again.
